South American soybean oil markets split directions during the week ending Sept. 15, as Platts data showed Argentine free-on-board values gaining ground even while Chicago Board of Trade soybean oil futures edged lower, whereas Brazilian prices retreated and the premium Brazilian supply held over Argentine material contracted significantly.
Chicago futures and US supply data
CBOT October soybean oil futures closed at 69.88 cents per pound Sept. 15, a decline of 0.34 cent per pound, or 0.48%, from 70.22 cents per pound Sept. 8. The contract traded erratically during the stretch, hitting 71.41 cents per pound Sept. 10 before tumbling 3.11% Sept. 11 in the wake of the US Department of Agriculture’s September Crop Production and World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates reports.
The USDA lifted its 2026 US soybean production forecast to 4.535 billion bushels, with yield estimated at 52.8 bushels per acre. Despite the bigger crop figure, the department cut projected 2026/27 US soybean ending stocks by 10 million bushels to 310 million bushels after increasing projected exports by the same amount.
New US processing figures supplied another fundamental element Sept. 15. The National Oilseed Processors Association said its members crushed 205.46 million bushels of soybeans in August, falling short of market expectations of 211.55 million bushels. The crush exceeded the year-earlier level by 8.24% but was 5.17% under July.
NOPA put soybean oil stocks at 1.201 billion pounds, under market expectations of 1.257 billion pounds and 3.5% beneath the year-earlier level, giving a fresh signal of US soybean oil availability as the market transitions into the new-crop harvest.
Brazilian crop estimates
In Brazil, national agricultural supply agency Conab pegged the country’s soybean crop at 180.4 million metric tons in its Sept. 15 report, a reduction of 60,000 metric tons from its prior estimate. Conab’s initial projection for the 2026/27 soybean crop stood at 181.64 million metric tons, versus the USDA’s current projection of 186 million metric tons.
Argentina strengthens against Brazil
Against the somewhat softer weekly CBOT backdrop, Argentine export differentials firmed. Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed Argentine soybean oil FOB Up River for October loading at $1,223.13 per metric ton Sept. 15, an increase of $5.74 per metric ton, or 0.47%, from $1,217.39 per metric ton Sept. 8.
The October Up River basis gained 60 points over the period to minus 1,440 points against CBOT October futures, up from minus 1,500 points. The stronger differential more than compensated for the decline in the underlying futures contract, enabling Argentine outright prices to climb.
Brazil headed the other way. Platts assessed Brazilian soybean oil FOB Paranagua for October loading at $1,227.53 per metric ton Sept. 15, a drop of $7.50 per metric ton, or 0.61%, from $1,235.03 per metric ton Sept. 8. The October basis finished the period unchanged at minus 1,420 points against CBOT October futures.
The divergence slashed Brazil’s October premium over Argentina to $4.40 per metric ton from $17.64 per metric ton Sept. 8. The spread between the two origins’ October basis levels likewise shrank to a mere 20 points from 80 points.
Brazil’s November market also softened, with FOB Paranagua declining $5.51 per metric ton, or 0.45%, to $1,224.67 per metric ton. The November basis gained 10 points over the period to minus 1,480 points against CBOT December futures.
The Sept. 8-15 period thus revealed greater relative firmness in Argentine soybean oil, with a stronger Up River basis underpinning outright prices even as CBOT fell. Brazilian prices drifted lower and moved toward Argentina, sharply diminishing the premium that had defined the Brazilian market a week earlier.
