NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani weighed in on the recent FIFA World Cup match between Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Egypt. Argentina clinched a thrilling win over Egypt in a spectacular, nail-biting match to advance to the next round of the FIFA World Cup. Argentina’s win has the internet divided. However, Mamdani did not mince his words when he said Egypt was “robbed” of a well-deserved victory.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not hold back when he shared his honest take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina vs. Egypt World Cup match. In a short statement shared via Politics Global on X, he said: “Now if you take this bus to work, that adds up fast. Within six months, you will have spent 24 fewer hours on the bus. By the time a year rolls around, you will save more than two days of commuting time.”
“That means breakfast with your family. It means having the time to argue balls with your family and argue strikes at your kids’ little league game. It means getting home for bedtime.” Then Mamdani added candidly: “It means agreeing with your friends that Egypt were robbed yesterday.” As he finished saying this, he paused for a second as the crowd cheered in unison for him.

One fan commented: “Mamdani is a cool guy. New York should be so lucky to have him as their mayor.” A second fan wrote: “AGREED! Throw out the VAR! Throw out the hydration break!” A third fan penned: “He speaks the truth. This has been the most shameful and disgraceful World Cup EVER. Corrupt and rotten FIFA must go. Infantino must go. We want a new governing body.”
Finally, a fan chimed in: “This whole situation has damaged trust in the tournament. FIFA should focus on transparency and accountability, because no amount of explanations will silence genuine questions from fans.”
Notably, Egypt’s coach and players also expressed their disappointment after yesterday’s game. They also reportedly alleged unfair treatment meted out to them (via The Comeback). Egypt’s coach Hossam Hassan said: “We haven’t seen respect or fair play. Life is unfair. The world is unfair. OK, but why isn’t there any fairness in sports? I’m not convinced by this outcome and by the way things unfolded in this match.”
