Milei returns the Falkland Islands issue to Argentinas agenda – UA.NEWS

In Argentina, President Javier Milei has returned the issue of the Falkland Islands to the political agenda, promoting an initiative concerning Buenos Aires’ sovereignty claims over the archipelago. As the Buenos Aires Times writes, many perceived this move as an attempt to divert attention from the country’s domestic problems.

Sea Lion and threats of sanctions

In a nationwide address on September 3, Milei linked Argentina’s nearly two-century-old claims to the islands with the Sea Lion project. According to the publication, the Anglo-Israeli project involves the development of oil resources, and the president sought to present the sovereignty issue as an economic one as well.

The column’s author believes there is a contradiction in Milei’s policy: he seeks to portray Argentina as a country offering legal certainty for foreign capital while at the same time threatening punishment for companies, shareholders, and directors involved in a project disputed on nationalist grounds.

Arguments of the parties

The Buenos Aires Times notes that the United Kingdom bases its position on the islanders’ right to self-determination. Argentina, for its part, refers to territorial sovereignty, including the archipelago’s geographical proximity and historical continuity.

The publication also writes that the Vaca Muerta shale field already brings Argentina about $20 billion annually, while oil production on the South Atlantic shelf remains a prospect for the future. In the author’s view, a possible final settlement of the dispute will require taking into account both the position of the islands’ population and Argentina’s territorial arguments.
