There is no doubt Marcos Senesi had looked to have done everything required to force his way into Argentina’s World Cup plans, his omission from the squad has been a surprise to many. It’s left many wondering if his imminent transfer to Tottenham may help Marcos’ chances going forward.
Argentina World Cup Squad
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has named seventeen players from their 2022 World Cup winning squad in Qatar, a squad which Senesi also just missed out on. The notable inclusions in Marcos’ centre back position contain fellow Premier League defenders Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez.
Both Romero and Martinez add valuable experience to the group, as does Benfica centre back Nicolas Otamendi, but many believe Senesi would have added more quality and positivity to the Argentina squad.
Tottenham Transfer
Reports suggest Senesi is on the verge of joining Spurs following Bournemouth’s historic campaign. Such a move would represent another significant step in his career and provide him with a platform at an undoubtedly bigger club.
It’s on ongoing frustration for Cherries fans, particularly after finishing sixteen points better of than Tottenham in this season’s Premier League. It just seems to be a constant that sizeable clubs have more on eyes on them and feel a ‘safer bet’ for international call ups. The Bournemouth faithful will certainly be hoping that star midfielder Alex Scott doesn’t feel the same. He seemed to do more than enough to be included in England’s World Cup squad, but also missed out. Scott will be of interest to many of the elite clubs in the Premier League, but the Cherries will be determined to keep hold of their midfield magician.
All of that being said, a transfer alone will not guarantee a return to Argentina contention. Senesi will need to establish himself as a regular starter in North London and maintain the levels that made him one of Bournemouth’s standout performers.
With the next cycle of international fixtures already on the horizon, age is also on his side. Central defenders often reach their peak in their early thirties, and Senesi still has several years remaining at the highest level.
His World Cup omission will sting, particularly after a season that suggested he had earned serious consideration. Yet if his anticipated move to Tottenham proves successful, the disappointment of missing out this summer may ultimately become the catalyst for a more prominent international future, to the the potential annoyance of Cherries fans.
For now, Argentina’s loss may feel like a harsh verdict. But Senesi’s story with the national team may not be finished just yet.
