Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández has spoken out after receiving a red card in the FIFA World Cup Final. The Chelsea star was cautioned for dissent in the second half and subsequently shown a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.

His sending off meant Argentina had to compete through 30 minutes of extra time with just 10 men. Spain found it difficult to capitalize but ultimately secured victory through Ferran Torres’ sharp half-volley inside the penalty area.
Prior to his red card, Fernández was central to Argentina’s World Cup run, nodding in the decisive goal against Egypt and netting a vital equalizer in their 2-1 victory over England. Nevertheless, following his red card, he posted a message to his followers on social media, via The Mirror.

Slightly more than 24 hours after his dismissal, the Chelsea midfielder posted on social media and stated: “As time goes by, you realize there is something much bigger than just a result. For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way.

“It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up. It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment.
“I want to thank all the Argentine fans. Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for the affection, for the unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world.
“Wearing my country’s jersey is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I get to defend it.”

Across the competition, he registered two goals in seven outings across the USA, Canada and Mexico, playing every single minute of Lionel Scaloni’s side’s matches, right up until his red card at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.
Fernández has faced widespread condemnation from analysts for his dismissal. His act of dissent toward referee Slavko Vincic resulted in a costly and needless booking, while his second foul on Cubarsi was high, late, and could reasonably have warranted a straight red card.
His domestic media were equally scathing following the final whistle. Argentine outlets La Nación and Olé both awarded him a 4/10, while Clarín rated him a five before summing up his performance with the damning verdict: “The sending-off capped off one of his worst matches of the tournament.”
