FAR ROCKAWAY, N.Y. (VINnews) – — Argentine President Javier Milei visited Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway on Tuesday during his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, delivering remarks to the Jewish school community and receiving the Ohev Yisrael award.

The visit was Milei’s first major engagement with the Jewish community during his New York trip and came one day after Yom Kippur. Yeshiva Darchei Torah had announced the visit ahead of time, describing Milei as a strong supporter of the Jewish people and saying he was eager to address students at the Orthodox Jewish institution.
Argentina’s government confirmed Tuesday that Milei delivered a speech at the yeshiva and received the Ohev Yisrael award during the visit. The award was presented in recognition of his support for the Jewish people and Israel.

The president’s appearance at the Far Rockaway yeshiva was part of a broader three-day New York schedule surrounding the 81st U.N. General Assembly.
Milei arrived in New York Tuesday and was scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, address the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday and hold additional meetings with business and academic figures before returning to Argentina.
A prominent Jewish stop
The visit had been announced by Yeshiva Darchei Torah before Milei’s arrival.

In a letter to parents, the school said Milei would visit the campus and address students. The school said the president’s schedule and security requirements would result in changes to some dismissal times and procedures.

The school described Milei as a leader who has publicly supported the Jewish people at a time of rising antisemitism.
Milei has made support for Israel and close ties with the Jewish community a prominent part of his foreign-policy agenda since taking office.
His visit to Darchei Torah also comes as he continues a series of engagements with Jewish organizations and leaders during trips to the United States.
Ohev Yisrael award
During Tuesday’s visit, Milei received the Ohev Yisrael award from Yeshiva Darchei Torah.
The Hebrew phrase “Ohev Yisrael” refers to love for the Jewish people. Argentine government officials said the award recognized Milei’s position regarding the Jewish people and Israel.
Reports from Argentina said Milei spoke to the yeshiva community but that officials did not immediately release details of the remarks.
The visit was scheduled before Milei’s appearance at the United Nations, where he is expected to address the General Assembly as part of his New York trip.
Milei’s relationship with Israel
Milei has repeatedly expressed support for Israel and has sought closer relations between Argentina and Israel.
His government has made strengthening ties with Israel a significant part of its foreign policy. The president has also maintained close relations with Jewish leaders and organizations in the United States.
The Far Rockaway visit placed those positions in a distinctly local setting, with Milei speaking directly to students and members of an Orthodox Jewish educational community.
For Yeshiva Darchei Torah, the visit also brought an international head of state to its campus during one of the busiest weeks of the Jewish calendar and the opening of the U.N. diplomatic season in New York.
Milei is scheduled to deliver his address to the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday as part of his New York visit. His agenda also includes meetings with business leaders and other officials before he returns to Argentina later in the week.
