The Argentinian government of President Javier Milei formally authorized the entry of United States troops into national territory this Friday through a decree published in the Official Bulletin. The deployment is part of the joint military exercise known as “Atlantic Dagger,” scheduled to run from April 21 to June 12, and coincides with the month marking the 44th anniversary of the Malvinas War.

The decree, signed by Milei and his cabinet ministers, frames the operation as a measure to enhance operational cooperation with Washington. The exercises will involve Argentinian Navy commandos, U.S. Marine special forces, Air Force operational units, Blackhawk helicopters, and tactical support aircraft.

Training activities will concentrate on high-complexity missions including so-called counterterrorism operations, hostage rescue scenarios, and coordinated maneuvers in demanding environments. The primary locations for the drills will be Puerto Belgrano Naval Base, the Córdoba Military Garrison, and the VII Air Brigade of the Argentinian Air Force.

The timing of the exercise has drawn domestic criticism, as the deployment of U.S. forces occurs while Argentina commemorates the 44th anniversary of the 1982 Malvinas conflict and amid reports of British military presence on the disputed islands. Deputy Agustina Propato noted that the United States maintains a strategic alliance with the United Kingdom, a relationship critics argue undermines Argentina’s longstanding sovereignty claim over the Malvinas.

The exercise was originally slated to commence on April 6 but was postponed due to the outbreak of the Israeli-U.S. war against Iran.
