Who Aided Flávio Bolsonaro’s Escape? Reports of Police Escort in Argentina as Trump Opens Doors to the U.S.
Far-right Flávio Bolsonaro fled Brazil after losing the run-off election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and disobeying a court order that prohibited him from leaving the country. According to reports, he crossed into Argentina with his wife and two daughters, boarded a private jet to Ecuador, and continued on to the United States, where the Trump administration made it clear it would welcome him.
The senator and former Liberal Party candidate left Brazil seeking to evade judicial investigations against him for alleged money laundering, corruption, and foreign campaign financing.
Amid the controversy, the question arises both in South America and international opinion: who facilitated Flávio Bolsonaro’s escape?
Escorted by Argentine Police
Media reports from sources such as Página/12 indicate that Flávio Bolsonaro and his family ultimately fled Brazil by crossing the border from Foz do Iguaçu to Puerto Iguaçu.
“At 10:50 PM this Tuesday, riding in a white van, escorted by an Argentine police vehicle, the four members of the Bolsonaro family entered Argentina through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, and 40 minutes later boarded the same plane that had been waiting since Monday night, which finally took off at 12:21 AM heading to Guayaquil, Ecuador,” the source reported, noting that after their departure, several vans and patrol cars from the Airport Security Police (PSA) were recorded leaving.
The Gulfstream G400 aircraft, registered as LV-JQW in Argentina, landed on Ecuadorian soil early Wednesday morning and, after refueling, departed for Miami, ultimately arriving at Opa-locka Executive Airport by midmorning.
The route traversed Paraguay, Bolivia, and Peru, avoiding Brazilian airspace, according to Brazilian broadcaster CBN.
Página/12 revealed that the Gulfstream aircraft used for the escape, along with the air transportation company Baires Fly, is owned by Sergio Daniel Mastropietro, who has been implicated in laundering money in a corruption case involving kickbacks in the National Disability Agency (Andis), which has compromised the administration of Argentine President Javier Milei.
According to the records, Baires Fly issued hundreds of millions of pesos in false invoices for flights that never took place.
The cited media outlet characterized Bolsonaro’s escape as an operation that “wasn’t so simple.” They noted that at Iguazú Airport on Monday, several agents from the Argentine Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE) were observed, “which led airport authorities to suspect something was about to happen and, moreover, “exhibits some indication of complicity from the Javier Milei government,” which has yet to acknowledge Lula’s electoral victory in Brazil.
In fact, it wasn’t until U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he heard Flávio Bolsonaro was in Argentina that the government of Milei confirmed on Tuesday night what it had denied earlier: that Bolsonaro and his family entered the southern nation via Misiones and boarded the private plane that had been waiting for them.
“The National Migration Directorate reports that at 10:50 PM on October 27, the citizens Flávio Nantes Bolsonaro, Fernanda Antunes Figueira Bolsonaro, Carolina Figueira Bolsonaro, and Luiza Figueira Bolsonaro entered Argentina through the international border crossing at Tancredo Neves Bridge in Misiones province with valid travel documents without any legal impediment to entering the country; also, the entries were recorded by the authority without incidents. Furthermore, at 11:30 PM, the incoming delegation boarded a private flight dispatched by Baires Fly S.A. to the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, as indicated in the flight plan,” Migration reported.
Marco Rubio’s Involvement in Bolsonaro’s Escape
From the Trump administration, it was confirmed to the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that they are aware of Flávio Bolsonaro’s arrival in the country and will grant visas for him and his family to remain on U.S. soil.
Citing sources close to the Bolsonaro family, the media stated that the far-right figure arrived in the United States accompanied by his wife, Fernanda, and their two daughters.
According to Folha, an American linked to the Trump administration and a person close to the senator indicated that the operation to facilitate his escape from Brazil involved U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Página/12 noted that the plan is for him to “lead the opposition against Lula” from the North American nation, the same opposition to which he declared: “I never thought about leaving the country. I will hand over my passports and defend myself.”
