Pope Leo will travel to his former Diocese of Chiclayo in northern Peru, where he will dine with local clergy and visit the San Óscar Romero chapel, which was recently reconstructed with funds raised by donors linked to the Pope.
The Holy See released a detailed itinerary of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November.
His 12-day visit will begin in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo on 6 November and conclude in Callao, Peru on 17 November.
In Uruguay, he will meet President Yamandú Orsi and celebrate vespers with the bishops, clergy, deacons and religious in Montevideo. He will also visit Paysandú in eastern Uruguay, meet staff and students at a university in Montevideo, and hold a prayer vigil at the 60,000-seat Estadio Centenario.
On Sunday, 8 November, the Pope will celebrate Mass in front of the Cathedral Basilica of Florida, the National Shrine of Uruguay’s spiritual patron, Our Lady of the Thirty-Three.
“I bring you news of great joy” (Lk 2:10) is the theme for the Uruguayan stint of the papal visit, while “All are welcome – go and proclaim” is that for Argentina on 8-11 November.
In the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, he will visit President Javier Milei and celebrate Mass at the Monumento de los Españoles, site of the International Eucharistic Congress of 1934. He will also celebrate vespers with Argentina’s bishops and synodal teams at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity.
On 10 November, Leo will visit the city of Córdoba and celebrate Mass, before returning to Buenos Aires for a youth vigil at the Monumento de los Españoles.
Before his departure on 11 November, he will visit a prison and celebrate Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, Argentina’s national Marian shrine.
The city council of Buenos Aires has clashed with the organising committee for the annual LGBT Pride march, scheduled for 7 November, after proposing that it should be postponed until 21 November.
“Let us open our hearts” is the theme for the Pope’s visit to Peru on 11-17 November.
Pope Leo will meet Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori on his arrival in Lima. Over the following days he will meet bishops, clergy and religious, and attend a prayer vigil with young people in the 80,000-seat Estadio Monumental.
On 13 November he will travel to his former diocese, Chiclayo in northern Peru, where he will dine with local clergy and make a private visit to the San Óscar Romero chapel in the La Victoria district, which was recently reconstructed with funds raised by donors linked to Cardinal Robert Prevost before his election as Pope.
The next day he will conduct the rite of the Coronation of the Immaculate Virgin in Chiclayo’s cathedral, before travelling to the city of Santa Cruz de Succhabamba in the Andes to celebrate Mass. He will return to Chiclayo that evening to celebrate the close of the Jubilee Year of St Toribius of Mogrovejo, the Spanish missionary who was Archbishop of Lima until his death in 1606.
Pope Leo will visit Cusco and meet missionaries and representatives of the Amazonian peoples in Pucallpa. He will depart Peru from from Callao, outside Lima, on 16 November, and arrive in Rome on 17 November.
The Pope will take 14 flights in the course of the apostolic journey, travelling more than 19,000 miles and celebrating nine public Masses.
