After launching Stargate projects in the US, UAE, and Norway, OpenAI has now announced yet another ambitious AI data center project in Argentina. The project will be developed at an investment of a whopping US$ 25 billion, the largest such digital infrastructure investment in Argentina so far.
The government of Argentina has signed a landmark agreement with OpenAI, and Argentine-U.S. firm Sur Energy to construct a large-scale AI data center in Patagonia. Argentina’s President Javier Milei, and Argentine Nuclear Board president Demian Reidel announced the project alongside OpenAI representatives recently.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hailed the project as a “milestone” and stated on social media that “We are proud to announce plans to launch Stargate Argentina, an exciting new infrastructure project in partnership with one of the country’s leading energy companies, Sur Energy.”
The facility will be fully powered by renewable energy and its capacity is expected to reach 500MW. In a presidential press release, the project was described as a “pioneering artificial intelligence infrastructure project” that will “place Argentina at the forefront of the global AI ecosystem and host the next generation of AI computing.”
The initiative will be supervised by Argentina’s RIGI investment program to support tax incentives, exchange rate benefits as foreign investors have committed over US$ 200 million. Through this partnership the Milei administration intends to establish Argentina as Latin America’s premier AI hub.
