Argentina is experiencing a sharp rise in prices for its traditional barbecue (asado), a key element of national culture. In March 2026, the average price of beef for asado reached a record high of about $12.50 per kilogram, raising concerns among consumers and economists.
In local currency, the price stood at 17,784 pesos per kilogram. This marks a 5.5% increase compared to the previous month and a 65% rise year-on-year, nearly doubling the country’s inflation rate.
Official data shows inflation reached 3.4% in March and 9.4% for the first quarter. However, meat prices are rising significantly faster than the overall average, pointing to specific issues within the sector.
Experts attribute the surge to a combination of factors, including higher prices in pesos, a stronger national currency against the dollar, and limited supply in the livestock market.
Farmers are increasingly holding back cattle in ожидании better selling conditions, reducing slaughter volumes and tightening supply. At the same time, strong global demand encourages exports, further pressuring domestic prices.
Economists also note that a relatively stable exchange rate, combined with rising local prices, increases costs in dollar terms. This could reduce the competitiveness of Argentine beef in international markets.
For ordinary Argentinians, the result is clear — barbecue, once an affordable staple, is gradually becoming a luxury. Rising prices are reshaping consumption habits and highlighting deeper economic challenges.
