December 19 – Qatar, which has just hosted the final of the Intercontinental Cup between PSG and Flamengo, and the final of the Arab Cup between Morocco and Jordan on consecutive days, will host the men’s Finalissima 2026 at the Lusail Stadium on March 27, 2026.
The Finalissima 2026 will see European champions Spain take on South American champions Argentina.
Far from being a one-event wonder with the hosting of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has rapidly turned itself into the go-to host for international football.
H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, Minister of Sports and Youth and Chairman of the LOC, said: “Qatar is proud to host this prestigious match between two champions. We have a track record of delivering world-class sports events, providing an exceptional experience for fans, supporters and media. Hosting Finalissima 2026 further demonstrates the trust our partners continue to show in Qatar.”
This will be the second time the Finalissima has been played between the Conmebol and UEFA champions under the memorandum of understanding signed by the two confederations in 2020.
Argentina played Italy in 2022, winning 3-0 at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Rather than take the second edition back to South America, Conmebol chose to play in Qatar. A curious decision considering how anxious the South American confederation is to host more games of in 2030 of the centenary edition of the World Cup.
Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez said: “This showpiece game is more than a competition, it is a symbol of collaboration and respect between confederations, and an opportunity for fans to enjoy a truly historic occasion.”
With Qatar nearer Europe than South America, the Spanish and their fans are unlikely to complain too much about the travel. Argentina fans are likely to feel a little short changed that they won’t see their World Champion team on their own continent.
UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said: “This match symbolises the unification of two footballing continents and showcases the global reach of our sport in such a prestigious fixture. We look forward to an unforgettable evening of elite football and international celebration.”
