(NewsNation) — Billionaire Peter Thiel has reportedly purchased a home and temporarily moved his family to Argentina, sparking intense interest in why the conservative political donor with a strong foothold on American politics would leave the United States.
Over the past couple of months, the controversial PayPal and Palantir co-founder has purchased a mansion in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and enrolled his children in school there, sources familiar with Thiel’s plans and Argentine officials told The New York Times. He has also met with President Javier Milei and other officials, the sources said.
The Argentine government is considering offering Thiel permanent residence or citizenship, sources told The Times, though a spokesperson for Milei has denied the claim.
Thiel has drawn criticism recently over his involvement with Palantir, the data-mining company that has assisted with the Trump administration’s recent migrant deportation crackdown. A batch of Epstein files released last fall included Thiel’s name, leading to additional scrutiny over his alleged relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
What are Thiel’s motivations for relocating to Argentina?
Thiel’s motivations for establishing a presence in Argentina partly stem from his concerns about the trajectory of the United States, his affinity for Milei’s libertarian ideology and a general interest in “backup countries” in the event of a major world conflict, The Times reported.
Thiel has been vocal about the threat of nuclear war and potential negative consequences of AI, The Times reported. He may view the South American country as a perfect location, away from the threats he sees in the Northern Hemisphere.
Thiel has a history of pursuing backup options for himself: In 2011, he gained New Zealand citizenship, and in 2022, he applied for a passport in Malta, The Times reported.
His concerns about the direction of the U.S. reportedly center on California’s potential implementation of a one-time 5% tax on billionaires, should the initiative pass the upcoming November ballot. Thiel left the state in 2025 ahead of the Jan. 1 deadline for the proposed tax, the Independent reported.
Thiel has enjoyed his time in Argentina so far, The Times reported, finding common ground with the country’s president over their shared disdain for taxes, socialism and progressive politics.
Milei described a recent meeting between the two positively, saying they both view “taxes as theft,” Newsweek reported, citing the Buenos Aires Times.
What does Thiel’s link to Argentina mean for his presence in the US?
Reports of a move to Argentina have puzzled observers, given Thiel’s political investments and his companies’ success under the Trump administration.
Thiel donated millions to Trump’s 2016 campaign and funded and mentored Vice President J.D. Vance during his rise to political prominence. While news organizations haven’t reported the move as permanent, relocating to Argentina could affect his operations in the United States and political influence.
Palantir has earned $687 million from government contracts in the first quarter of 2026, according to the Independent. Another Thiel-backed venture, defense tech firm Anduril, recently secured a 10-year contract with the U.S. Army worth $20 billion.
How has Argentina reacted to Thiel’s arrival?
Since taking office in 2023, Milei has attempted to revamp Argentina’s economy by pushing deregulation and government spending cuts, according to The Times, while also seeking foreign investment in the country.
Milei’s supporters have embraced Thiel’s presence in Argentina and view it as an economic positive, The Times reported, while critics argue it’s not in the country’s best interest to have him around.
“What Peter Thiel is doing is terrible, and his settling in Argentina is even worse,” Argentine politician Elisa Lilita Carrió wrote on X. “You need to look up what Palantir is. It goes against the Republic, democracy, and freedoms.”
