Inspired goalkeeping performance from Buchanan
Scotland produced a disciplined defensive performance but could not prevent Argentina scoring in each half to win 2-0 at the Hockey World Cup in Belgium.
Argentina are ranked second in the world and went into this match as overwhelming favourites. Most of the game was played in the Scottish half but the underdogs, playing at the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, proved difficult to break down.
Jess Buchanan, the Scotland goalkeeper, produced a number of impressive saves but Argentina eventually prevailed through goals from Maria Granatto and Lara Casas.
It was Scotland’s third and final game in Pool B and followed defeats by Germany and the USA. The Scots will now go into the second phase to determine their final classification.
Argentina took the lead via a penalty corner after 10 minutes at the Belfius Hockey Arena. Buchanan saved Valentina Raposo’s initial shot but could not prevent the talented Granatto clipping home the rebound.
The South Americans continued to dominate in the second quarter but Buchanan stopped them from moving further ahead, diving at full length to deny Agustina Gorzelany.
Under the cosh
Scotland were under the cosh, with Argentina having nine shots at goal in the first half compared to none from the Scots.
They came into the game more in the second half but Argentina sealed the win when Lara Casas turned in a cross from Granatto to make it 2-0.
Scotland are next in action on Saturday when they play the team that finishes third in Pool C, likely to be Ireland or Spain.
