Argentinian President Javier Milei has outlined a special plan for foreign investors in Argentina. For an investment of U.S. $350,000, foreign investors can be on the path to receive Argentinian citizenship and an Argentinian passport. This way, the country can increase the number of immigrants and attract investors to help build Argentina’s economy. Under Milei’s leadership, Argentina’s economy has greatly improved over what it had been a mere five years ago. Because of this, Argentina is now the fifth largest economy in the Americas behind only those of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Brazil. This investment plan is in fact not unusual. Many countries including the United States allow investors to put money into the economy as a pathway for eventual citizenship.
Will it work? Critics allege that this plan will bring in investors of dubious character. This might include for example Russian oligarchs or Chinese triads. President Milei has assured that foreign investors will be screened. One important thing to understand about Argentina is that like the United States it is a land of immigrants. The country was built by immigrant labor, and the country is blessed with excellent agricultural land and abundant oil and natural gas resources. Since Milei took over, the country has been attracting immigrants and investors. Will this latest -plan work? Unknown, but currently Argentina is looking more stable than many parts of the world at present.
