Argentina: ‘standing on the ball’ now punished with an indirect free kick and a yellow card
الأرجنتين: “الوقوف على الكرة” يُعاقب الآن بركلة حرة غير مباشرة وبطاقة صفراء
Argentinian football is introducing a new disciplinary measure. Starting this weekend, the act of ‘standing on the ball’—deemed provocative—will automatically be sanctioned on all pitches.
The National Refereeing Directorate has issued a clear directive to match officials. From now on, any player who stands on the ball with both feet will be deemed guilty of unsporting behavior.
This decision comes as the act has become increasingly common in recent months, sparking tension and confusion among players.
An immediate double sanction
Referees are required to systematically punish such actions: the opposing team will be awarded an indirect free kick, and the offending player will receive a yellow card. The set piece will be taken from the spot of the infraction, in accordance with Law 12 of the Laws of the Game, which governs fouls and unsporting conduct.
A gesture seen as provocation
According to the explanation given, standing on the ball is considered a provocative attitude toward the opponent, potentially triggering confrontations and disrupting the flow of the match.
In addition to tarnishing football’s image, this move also poses an injury risk for the player involved.

Preserving the spirit of the game
With this new measure, Argentinian authorities aim to reinforce respect among all participants and prevent incidents on the pitch. It’s a strong message to players in a football culture where behavior is under ever-closer scrutiny.
This decision could eventually inspire other leagues facing similar challenges.
